Bike to Worship Weekend

Join the Creation Care Coalition for

Bike to Worship Weekend

April 30 to May 2, 2010

Help kick off the regional Bike to Work Week by biking to your favorite worship service April 30, May 1 or May 2.

...Then plan to join the CCC

for a Sunday Picnic in the Park

on May 2 from noon to 3 pm

Pack up your paniers with picnic-fare-to-share and join the Creation Care Coalition for a Sunday picnic at Holmes-Foster Park, on Westerly Pkwy. Meet others in the CCC, learn more about this local organization as well as PA Interfaith Power and Light and swap your bike-to-worship stories.

There will be plenty of space for kids to play, and if you help bring it, plenty to eat and drink. Questions? Contact Jon Brockopp at jeb38@psu.edu

It's a great way to get in touch with the wonders of creation (even rain is a wonder after all), do something emission-free for the earth and care for your body as well.

Below is a list-in-progress of tips and ideas for how various groups are marking Bike to Worship weekend. Contact Barb Ballenger at barbballenger@gmail.com if you'd like to post route information for biking to your place of worship, be a contact for people coming your way or lead a ride. We'll post the information here as we receive it.

Ways to get in on the action:

  • Do you drive a long way to get to worship? Try driving to a park and riding from there. This can also be a nice option if you have small children who can only do a short ride.

Local bike routes to various places of worship

(This isn't a comprehensive list; we post them as we get them)

Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 867 Gray's Woods Blvd, Port Matilda

Good Shepherd is one of the more challenging locations, as there's no direct bike path and it's a bit hilly. Here are our suggestions:

  • Do you live in the Gray's Woods neighborhood? Then hop on your bike and come on over.
  • Park and Ride from Gray's Woods Park -- For families with young children, park at Gray's Woods Park just down the street from Good Shepherd and bike up to the church.
  • Park and Ride from Circleville Park -- for teens and older. This isn't a long ride, but it's hilly and there is some traffic. From Circleville Park (on Circleville Road) head northwest to Scotia. Turn left on Scotia and take it to Meeks Lane. Turn right and head to Grays Woods Blvd. Turn right and head up to the church. It's about 1.9 miles in all.
  • Want to ride from home? Find a route by using Google Maps for cyclists or contact Jess Ballenger (jess.ballenger@gmail.com) for suggestions.

Grace Lutheran Church, 205 South Garner St. State College

See what the Grace Lutheran green team has planned for the weekend by dowloading this flier. Plans include a group ride from Grace Lutheran to the picnic in the park on Sunday.

Check out this Google Map with route directions from the church to Holmes Foster Park.
