10 percent in 2010 Challenge

Page history last edited by Sylvia Neely 14 years, 3 months ago

“The earth dries up and withers, the world languishes and withers; the heavens languish together with the earth.  The earth lies polluted under its inhabitants; for they have transgressed laws, violated the statutes, broken the everlasting covenant.” (Isaiah 24:4,5)

God’s creation is being threatened by climate change.  The problem is large, seemingly intractable, and difficult to get our minds around.  But there is hope if we work together and if we remember that God, by giving us dominion over the world, has made us responsible for its well-being.  By combating climate change, we will be doing God’s work.  Climate change threatens to deprive future generations of the blessings of this earth.  It is already causing environmental problems in other parts of the world that are hurting people now.  How can we help?  What can we do?

Members of the Environmental Concerns Committee at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church have decided to tackle this problem by beginning at home, by pledging to reduce their carbon emissions in 2010 by 10%.  We are now inviting all of you to take the 10% in 2010 Challenge by pledging to reduce your household’s greenhouse gas emissions by 10% in the coming year. We all want to do a better job of living in the earth without contributing to its destruction.  But unless we keep track of our actual impact, it is impossible to know how we are doing.

You may print off a form that allows you to calculate your household’s carbon emissions.  Click here for the CARBON CALCULATOR Throughout the year we will be offering tips on how to reduce greenhouse gases.  We need to learn from each other.  Please tell us about the ways your family has responded to this challenge.  What did you do that made a difference?  We all want to read about your journey throughout the year.  What may seem simple or obvious to you may be a revelation to somebody else.  We are eager to hear your stories and your great ideas.

If you cannot join the challenge in January, you can join it whenever it is convenient for you.  The basic idea is to reduce your CO2 emissions by 10% in a twelve-month period.  Will you take the challenge?
